Unfortunately, if we use commercial insect repellents frequently and in big quantities, they can be harmful to our health and the environment.

Fortunately, there are some natural ways to get rid of these pesky crawlers. The use of candles is one among them. Without further ado, here are twelve candles that can keep bugs away.

Citronella candles

Although some may be doubtful of its effectiveness, this is undoubtedly one of the most widely used candles for calming these ravenous beasts.

Citronella oil is extracted from the lemongrass plant and is well known for killing insects (not the citronella plant). Mosquitoes have a highly developed sense of smell, which is why they are drawn to your blood.

Mosquitoes, on the other hand, find the candle’s zesty lemon-like aroma exceedingly annoying.

To enhance the candle’s effectiveness, light it in a spot where there is little air movement, or better yet, close your windows and doors when you light it.

2. Candles with peppermint

Peppermint is a wonderful aroma, but it’s not for most of these insects. Spiders, cockroaches, bedbugs, sandflies, fruit flies, wasps, ants, and ticks, to name a few, are all repelled by peppermint.

Because these pests despise the scent of peppermint, placing candles near their access points, such as windows, as well as their comfy hideaways, such as garages, closets, and under the sink, can effectively drive them away.

Do you have any of those dusty flying critters that eat your clothes? Yes, lavender repels moths from clothing.

Lavender irritates not just these moths, but also scorpions, flies, gnats, and mosquitoes.

Simply set the candles near your doors and windows to allow the fragrance to fill your home.

4. Candles made of cedarwood

Cedarwood is a natural bug repellent that works in a variety of ways to keep bugs out of your house and out of your life. To begin with, cedarwood is known to dehydrate insects.

Because most bugs are sensitive to moisture loss, when they come into contact with cedarwood, it dries out the moisture in their bodies and kills them.

The pheromones of the bugs are likewise disrupted by cedarwood. This is a necessary molecule that helps with navigation, mating, and other important functions.

Finally, cedarwood closes the bugs’ apertures, causing them to suffocate.

We’re all aware of the numerous health advantages of rosemary, as well as how useful it is in the kitchen. However, this is not the case for the majority of issues.

Rosemary has a strong odor that repels mosquitoes, cabbage moths, and flies, to mention a few pests.

6. Candles with basil

Basil is a great pest repellant in addition to spicing up your cuisine and making it appetizing. Its scent repels insects and flies.

It’s also known to be highly harmful to mosquito larvae, so place it where they thrive to prevent them from laying eggs.

Marigold is a good mosquito repellent in addition to eradicating nematodes and hazardous pests in your garden.

Lighting the candles at night, when the mosquitoes are most active, will kill them and leave you with a mosquito-free home.

8. Candles made of eucalyptus

Candles made of eucalyptus are effective spider repellents. Because spiders serve such an important part in the environment, they drive them away without injuring them.

They eat other insects, some of which can be harmful to humans. They should stay outside since no one wants to share a roof with a couple of frightening eight-legged monsters.

Silverfish, flies, cockroaches, fleas, and mosquitoes are all killed by eucalyptus candles, in addition to spiders.

Light these bug-repellent candles in areas where you’ve witnessed any of these bugs’ behaviors and watch them flee.

10. Bergamot scented candles

Bergamot is a wonderful pest repellant in addition to having a nice lemony aroma that is enough to calm and relax anyone.

We’ve all experienced how amazing cinnamon makes our sauces, soups, and other dishes smell and taste.

However, this is not the case for many of the faults that are causing you problems. Mosquitoes and ants are repulsed by the aroma of cinnamon and will avoid it.

Cinnamon has also been shown to kill mosquito larvae. Make sure to place the candle where you’ve seen a lot of them, just like you would with regular candles.

12. Candles scented with rose geranium

Rose geranium candles, like the rest of these candles, have a pleasant and calming aroma. However, most bugs, particularly mosquitoes, dislike that odor.

Mosquitoes follow their hosts by being drawn to the carbon dioxide we release. When you light this candle, the aroma tends to mask any odors you may emit, keeping them at bay.

Ants, flies, and silverfish, in addition to mosquitoes, find this aroma so overwhelming that they have no choice but to flee.

Nobody likes these bugs devouring their clothes, spoiling their food, or biting their skin. You may put a stop to these harmful pests with the help of these naturally perfumed candles.

Just make sure to keep the air movement to a minimum by locking the doors and windows in your home whenever you light one of these candles that keep bugs away to avoid the aroma being carried away by the wind.

  1. Thank you for the great information on how to get rid of certain pest. I’m currently having a problem with what I believe is carpet beetle’s. I don’t like spiders either. Hoping one of these candles work. I do have a question. I have a yorkie. Which peppermint candle is safe for animals. Also aucalyptus I heard is good. I also know the diffusers they say are bad for animals. So if I’m worried about carpet beetle’s, bedbugs and spiders…in your opinion, what would my go to candle be? Thank you so much. Sincerely Barbara.

    1. Hello Barbara, I recommend eucalyptus candles since they are effective in controlling a variety of bugs and insects like mosquitoes, spiders, etc. They also have a strong smell; not recommended to those allergic to strong smells.
